Intro
I am concerned about this issue because for me and many of my peers, social justice is a value we hold with high regard. It is the reason I chose to come to this school. I want Social Justice High School to have meaning for present and future students. I want the high school to have a clear purpose and direction that is founded on social justice principles. I have two young sisters who I hope one day can attend this high school and receive an education that is grounded in social justice.
This issue matters because the school was born out of a community struggle. It should live up to its name and carry on the legacy of the hunger strikers and the community struggle that it represents. I believe Social Justice can be more than just a typical high school. I believe that the students that attend Social Justice High School should embrace its values. This will require the school to foster the values of community activism and shared responsibility.
I have seen a downfall in the level of care for the school on behalf of faculty and students. I don't see enthusiasm or motivation in as many students as there should be given the history of the school. I feel the school is lacking a larger sense of purpose beyond academic achievement. This has affected me personally because I also get bored and get tired of just focusing on textbook knowledge. I felt that in my first two years at the school, I found that this larger purpose existed and my academic classes were more relevant and engaging.
