Historical Context
The Little Village Community is mostly low-income and mexican based. The community is known for being gang-infested and violent. In the neighborhood, there are not many schools that teens can choose from to go to high school. The community needed a school where the classes were engaging and a building where the students can feel safe. Starting around 1998, many parents and people from around the neighborhood demanded a quality high school that prepare them for the world ahead of them. Interestingly enough, the individuals who wished for a high school had to demonstrate fortitude, integrity, and ambition. The significance of this period was that, as part of his agenda, the mayor of Chicago was to build schools on the North Side (Insert fact here) It is inferred that Gery Chico resigned because of the pressure to build a school on the southwest of Chicago. What many people may forget is that the people who organized the hunger strike and events around this occurrence, most likely experienced stressful times.
