Sociological Imagination
1. The values of the hunger strike were “democracy, community ownership,...collaboration, accountability...and empowerment” (p.100). The hunger strike was an example of social justice and so Social Justice High School should live up to its name.
2. A value is an aspect of life that an individual or group regards as worthy as in the example of the hunger strike.
3. Clearly community ownership was a value of the hunger strike because after the strike various committees were formed dealing with various aspects of the school design that included and were made up of mostly community members (Stovall, 2006). For my Fire Project, I will focus on love, inclusion, and consciousness.
4. The 3 values that I focused on directly correlate with the sanctions and values that were displayed during the hunger strike. For my fire project always thought that the values related to my issue and the values during the hunger strike are the same. The time that people realize that the values of the hunger strike and the values of social justice are the same then the vision of the school is rejuvenated. No matter the sanctions of the time period, there are universal core values that every human being should abide by. I would say that someone can disregard the way you go about displaying love or care, and it should come from a genuine place in your heart.
5. Norms are a certain standard people meet to satisfy certain cultural expectations.
6. Three norm violations that were associated with my issue were that individuals camped in an undesirable location and these hunger strikers willingly decided to live on dirt that is not the usual habitat. Another norm violation can be that the community did not let higher authority decide the outcome of a neighborhood school. The norm is that people or groups would accept the decision of a board in higher power. One last norm that was violated was that the hunger strikers did not consume food for nineteen days which can be considered deviant behavior.
7. The informal norms or sanctions that were associated with my issue were that people fought for what they believed in. In some cases, this may not be looked at as a sanction or norm, but it all depends on perspective. From an activists' perspective this is a norm or sanction because one always looks out for change.
